  A regular haunt for curry lovers in Windsor for more than 30 years, this family-run restaurant has served thousands of happy customers over the decades, whether they're looking for a sociable meal with friends to end an evening out or a romantic dinner with a special someone.

  Boasting a menu packed with all the Tandoori classics you could hope for, The Red Rose also includes some more unusual dishes.

  As is the case with all good Indian food, there's plenty of choice for vegetarians, while the house specialities ensure people wanting something other than the usual fayre have the option to try something a little different.

  I opted for the mixed starter to begin, while my companion chose the Butterfly King Prawn (£5.75), a large king prawn dipped in spices and breadcrumbs and fried until temptingly golden.

  The mixed starter seemed a must-try, showcasing some of arguably the best Indian nibbles – with an onion bhaji, sheek kebab, chicken tikka and a vegetable samosa. Usually with a platter type starter there's something on the plate that you don't like as much as the rest of it, but here everything was lovely, with the meat melting-in-the-mouth and the bhaji and samosa crispy and flavour-packed while not too greasy. Great value at £5.50.

  For main courses it seemed sensible to try something a little different, so I went for the Tandoori Mixed Grill Cocktail Bahar (£9.95) a selection of beautifully cooked cuts of meat marinaded in the chef's secret mixture of spices which made for something with a good kick of heat to it but miles away from the cliche of post-pub fiery curry. At the other end of the scale my friend chose Murgh Makhni (£7.95) a mild chicken dish with a sauce of fresh cream, cashew nuts and almond. Not being a regular eater of Indian food she explained how spicy she'd like her main to be and was recommended the Makhni by the knowledgeable waiter who took our order and ensured we didn't want for anything through the entire process.

  By the time we'd added pilau rice (£2.50), peshwari naan (£2.50) and a plain naan (£1.50) we had more than enough food to get through - with portion sizes hearty and great value.

  The atmosphere was warm, the welcome friendly and even on a Thursday night the restaurant was busy, proving that the people of Windsor do think The Red Rose is blooming lovely – and with the 'low on price, high on taste' food we enjoyed, it's easy to understand why The Red Rose has been held in such affection by generations of local curry lovers.
