Hidden away in the rolling Berkshire countryside lies the George and Dragon in Swallowfield. This historic 16th century pub complete with exposed beams, open fire places, vintage art and antiques, exudes the warm and inviting atmosphere of the perfect pub retreat. The beautiful interior and quaint furnishings resemble that of Grandma's cosy country cottage.

The staff are friendly and welcoming, and all have good knowledge of the menu and surrounding area.

The menu is varied and has a choice of rich dishes. There is also a specials board, which is updated twice weekly. On arrival we were greeted by the charming manager who showed us to our table. The seating in the dining room is spacious, with ample good sized tables.

The meal began with home-made bread (still warm) with butter and a home-made tapenade.

For starter, I opted for scallops florentine. The king-size scallops were cooked to absolute perfection.

For main, I could not resist the Monkfish tail, served with creamed leeks and mustard mash. The dish was well seasoned, the flavours were rich and the portion was very generous.

For dessert, I chose the chocolate bread and butter pudding, this warm sweet pudding was the perfect ending on a cold winter night. The George And Dragon is popular with a variety of diners, from business lunches to romantic meals for two, meaning it is always wise to book a table.

The chefs are keen to promote locally-sourced and seasonal produce, purchasing most of their vegetables and cheeses from local suppliers, and having separate menus for spring/summer and autumn/winter.

The friendly staff and chefs are happy to cater for intolerances and allergies, and with their excellent experience and food knowledge can quickly rustle up a tasty meal to suit anyone.

Whether you are a keen rambler who has worked up a hearty appetite, or meeting with a loved one for a romantic meal, the homely atmosphere and heartfelt food will never fail to impress.
